Nicholas Abson is the founder and chairman and CEO of Cenergie Corporation PLC and was previously President of Cenergie Corporation in the United States. Prior to this Mr. Abson served as Chairman and CEO of ZeTek Power Plc where he transformed the company from a staff of four, with technology few thought could be commercialized, into a leading fuel cell company with 200 employees, offices in London and New York, research and development facilities in the UK, Belgium, France and Russia, production lines in Germany and the USA and extensive international partners and associates. ZeTek and its subsidiaries became the largest manufacturer of alkaline fuel cells in the world and the largest fuel cell company in Europe, where Mr. Abson oversaw the development of the first fuel cell factory in the world capable of manufacturing commercial volumes. Mr. Abson was the senior network science producer/director for UK’s independent television network, ITV before starting ZeTek. While directing a series on fuel cell technology, he discovered Elenco, a Belgian company that developed alkaline fuel cells for the European Space Program. He recognized the enormous potential of Elenco and raised funds to acquire the company in 1994.
Karen Meyer Bertram is President of International Environmental Solution Corporation an environmentally oriented company specializing in engineering solutions to produce efficient, reliable, continuous and safe pyrolytic systems for processing a variety of waste materials and producing Clean Renewable Energy. Karen Bertram’s background as an attorney brings to the company several key components that have been valuable in the early stages of its development. She graduated from Texas Tech University, School of Law, where she specialized in Business and Tax Law. Having received her Business degree from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from the Texas Tech University, she incorporated these skills with her background in law to start a boutique venture capital partnership, Newport Ventures Group, with another attorney. This company specialized in financing and assisting small businesses in the development successful business structures and plans, offering a number of individual services that filled a void to these companies. Her organizational skills and her ability to handle a number of jobs, to include sales, presentations, business operations, writing manuals, financing proposals and marketing, has been essential for the development of the company. Karen Bertram has interacted with the environmental agencies, both at a state and federal level, and has extensive knowledge of the conversion technologies, underdevelopment and in operation. She has been invited to numerous Renewable Energy conferences as guest speaker and as part of discussion panels on the environmental issues of technologies like the APS.
Harry W Braun III is the founder, Chairman and CEO of Sustainable Partners International (SPI) a wind energy company that developed a $150 million 120 MW Mesa Wind project in New Mexico. SPI is now focused on developing a network of wind projects that will allow General Electric and other wind manufacturers to mass-produce wind-powered hydrogen production systems on a scale to make hydrogen competitive with gasoline. Harry has been working as an energy and environmental analyst for the past 30 years, and is the author of The Phoenix Project: Shifting from Oil to Hydrogen, a 360-page book that documents how a renewable hydrogen economy can be implemented with wartime-speed. Scot Alan Brown President, Brownco Construction Company, Inc. Scot Brown began his journey in the construction industry as a laborer in 1972 and worked his way up, from a carpenter apprentice to a Journeyman Carpenter in 1976, while under the tutelage of his father, Robert Brown, at Brownco Construction Company, then located in Montebello, CA. Scot then attended the California State University Chico, School of Engineering and Applied Science where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree . In 1986 Scot together with 2 other partners, they founded Industrial Contracting Engineers, Inc. (ICE) where he was the CEO from 1986. In 1999 Scot retired from ICE, leaving it the 3rd largest general contractor in Orange County at that time. Scot then partnered up with Jeff Radtke to establish what is today, Brownco Construction Company, a family owned and operated business servicing the construction industry for the past 54 years. We are a self performing contractor for the following trades: Demolition, concrete construction, structural steel, plumbing and mechanical, and Hazmat. Today, Brownco Construction Company continues on as a growing Commercial General Contractor, with numerous licenses not only in California, but also in Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Hawaii and Ohio. Brownco Construction Company, Inc. has been a renewable energy company since 1975, where Scot first worked with Guy F. Atkinson at an SCE Facility in Paget, California, on a project called “Solar One,” it has been a topic of interest and fascination for Scot ever since. Scot has since gone on to build some of the first Hydrogen Fuel Stations in California for Honda R&D and has been highly involved in the planning and engineering of a Wind Energy Park being built in Kingman, Arizona as well as other such wind energy projects in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington. Mary Rose de Valladares is founder and principal of M.R.S. Enterprises, LLC, which provides management consulting, business development and government relations services in energy, environment and technology. M.R.S. is also engaged in sustainable real estate development in the southwestern U.S. She is the developer of HOPE, the Hydrogen Outreach Program for Education. Multilingual, Ms. de Valladares’ international experience and clientele span public, private and non-profit sectors. She currently manages the International Energy Agency Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (IEA HIA), the oldest and largest global cooperation in hydrogen R&D.
Daniel Emmett is a founding Board Member and Executive Director of Energy Independence Now (EIN). In his role at EIN, Mr. Emmett serves as advisor to the California Environmental Protection Agency on the development and implementation of the California Hydrogen Highways Network initiative. Previously, Mr. Emmett worked on hydrogen and energy conservation issues as the Energy Programs Director at Environment Now Foundation, where EIN was initially developed as a project of the Foundation. Prior to that, Mr. Emmett worked for one of Southern California's largest owner/operators of commercial office buildings where he developed and coordinated a portfolio-wide energy efficiency and conservation program that has energy-retrofitted over 10 million square feet of commercial office space, saving millions of dollars per year in energy costs. Mr. Emmett has also worked at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, directing the USAID funded, Agricultural Policy Research and Training Program, and at Conservation International, both in Washington D.C and Panama. Mr. Emmett holds a B. A. from the University of California Santa Cruz in Environmental Studies and Economics and an M.A. in International Development Policy from Stanford University.
John Gavlik is the founder and president of LearnOnLine, Inc., (www.learnonline.com) a company dedicated to promoting the application of online teaching and learning to the mediums of the Internet and World Wide Web. Mr. Gavlik is a degreed electronic engineer who, with his technical training, early on recognized the potential of these new communications mediums for effective distance education. This is especially true in the case of collaborative learning that involves individuals and groups that are geographically separated. One such collaborative project is the Renewable Energy Education Lab, or REEL Power, which uses renewable energy devices such as solar panels, wind turbines and fuel cells to help teach math and science. Designed by Mr. Gavlik, REEL Power provides students and teachers with an Internet-based teaching aid that allows them to reach out to other schools, worldwide, to share their research. Mr. Gavlik’s other professional work experience includes over 35 years of digital hardware, software and embedded firmware design for leading commercial and aerospace companies. In 1989 John co-founded MapTech, Inc., which was one of the first maritime electronic mapping companies. Maptech still maintains its dominant position in the field of electronic mapping. Mr. Gavlik is a graduate of the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) with a BSEE degree in Electronic Engineering.
Eric “Rick” Halperin MBA, CPA: Rick’s experience covers 25 years of a diverse spectrum of financial and operational management, strategic planning, and entrepreneurial endeavors. He has consulted and worked directly for both large private companies and for nonprofit organizations. He also has a broad background with alternative energy and environmental conservation organizations including serving for several years as the Director of Finance and Planning for the Nature Conservancy. His educational background includes undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies and Geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an MBA in Finance from the George Washington University.
Les Hamasaki Managing Director of the Green Technology Institute, Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation, (a not-for-profit community sustainable education and training organization - TomBradleyLegacy.org), Hamasaki has an extensive background in urban planning and creating sustainable economic development strategies for the City of Los Angeles. Mr. Hamasaki was with the City of Los Angeles Urban Planning and Community Development departments for over 14 years. His unique experience as an urban planner included the development of two 20-year master plans for the City of Los Angeles. He was involved with the development of both the 1975-95 City of Los Angeles Centers Concept Master Plan as a staff planner under Calvin Hamilton and the 1995-2015 Framework Plans as the Vice President of the Los Angeles Planning Commission under Mayor Riordan.
Valerie Kausen is currently the executive director for Eco Soul and on the Board of Trustees of The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity both public benefit, 501(c ) (3) organizations. Past experience includes Executive Producer The Magical World of Chuck Jones, teacher environmental awareness class at Ex’pression Center for New Media, certified in sustainable agriculture design by the Permaculture Institute and more than 20 years of project management, event coordination and business management.
David Konwinski, Onsite Power Systems, Inc. founder and is the corporation's CEO and marketing and business development director. He is responsible for establishing the corporation's business and research relationships with the University systems. He is also responsible for the majority of the corporation's strategic and business alliances, resulting in business, marketing and distribution agreements. He has over 18 years of experience in business and marketing. He is experienced as a business manager and marketing director working in the agriculture, financial and real estate development fields. His entrepreneurial experience in the real estate and agricultural market has led to successful business ventures of his own. Mr. Konwinski formerly created and managed a financial and leasing organization where he developed programs for financing various agricultural business projects. He created and operated a real estate development company. This company successfully developed, constructed and sold mid-range homes in the Southern California area.
Daniel Rabun Business Development, Commercial Sales, Engineer Future Energy Solutions Group, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Dan Rabun is the lead for Business Development and Commercial Sales for Hydrogen, and Hydrogen Equipment related to all energy and fuel applications. He covers the Western United States and is based out of Orange County in Southern California. Dan joined Air Products in 1976 as a Chemical Engineer from Villanova University. During his 30 years of employment, he has held positions in Process Engineering, Project Development, Project Engineering, and Construction for U.S. and worldwide projects. For 15 years he was Engineering Manager for the Western United States, with responsibility for Safety, Engineering, and Installation of industrial gas and utility supply systems at customer sites. He moved into the Sales Organization as a Field Sales Representative, and was promoted to Senior Sales Representative for Liquid and Bulk Gas Products. He joined the Future Energy Solutions Group 2 years ago. In that role, Dan works to find, nurture, and guide the best new alternative energy technologies as they mature, and integrate them to achieve viable commercial projects and signed contractual business arrangements. He is a passionate advocate for clean energy and the environment, committed to the concept of doing well by doing good. He has a wide range of interests in all areas of engineering, science, technology, and policy.
Glenn Rambach received his BS in Aerospace Engineering from Cal Poly University and his MS in Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. He is currently a technical consultant in advanced energy systems, has carried out advanced energy research since 1974. Motivated by the need for energy independence and security and clean energy systems, his research has included diesel combustion systems, laser fusion, hydrogen production and storage, fuel cell system designs and integrated renewable energy systems using storage. He developed optimization methods for design and operation of intermittent renewable energy systems where energy storage provides on-demand power. His 5-kW wind-solar-hydrogen-fuel cell facility still operates at the University of Nevada, DRI in Reno. Mr. Rambach has worked as a research engineer at Stanford University, Livermore National Laboratory, and the Desert Research Institute, Reno. He was Director of Engineering at Texaco Ovonic Fuel Cells, Director of New Technology at Tenneco Automotive and fuel cell system advisor to the US Army Tank Automotive Command before becoming a consultant. He is currently supporting an R&D company in the areas of hydrogen economics and synthetic hydrocarbon fuels.
Skip Staats is Chairman and founder of Eco Soul, Inc., which sponsors the National Fuel Cell Education Program (NFCEP) whose mission is to proactively advocate a hydrogen and renewable energy future through the mechanism of education and outreach. Eco Soul patented the worlds first commercially available Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cell (URFC) demonstration kit. Skip has been an active proponent of hydrogen-based systems for real-world installations as well as educational models that help students and adults understand the relevance of clean, sustainable energy that can replace our dependence on fossil fuels. Skip has continued to work with the City of Avalon for more than ten years to bring about environmental changes that support the concept of the Sustainable Power Park in Avalon.
Greg Watkins, Watkins/Baile & Associates Master Planners and Developers of large scale planned projects such as; destination golf and marina resorts, deep water shipping ports with LNG, green energy power parks, ethanol plants, infill mixed use, and new towns. Currently we have projects in California, Texas, Baja, Colima, Sinaloa, Baja Sur, and Sonora.
John R. Williams, P.E. I have worked in the energy sector since graduation in 1981. My engineering thesis addressed the conversion of waste to hydrogen and solvents. My first hydrogen project was the Euro-Quebec hydrogen program which consisted in the large scale production and liquefaction of hydrogen from renewable resources. My practical experience with hydrogen consists in the construction and operation of the solar powered hydrogen fueling station at Sunline, the construction and commissioning of the Chula Vista refueling station, the installation of a large scale natural gas reformer at SunLine, and the deployment and testing of hydrogen fuel cell and ICE powered vehicles in transit applications.
